Belong. Go Far. Stand Out.

“If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

This African proverb is one of several favorites quotes I turn to when I think about how my leadership philosophy, as it inspires a shared vision as the foundation for unified success. As a I drove north on I-75 to Bowling Green, OH, I noticed a bright orange billboard with two giant words in white letters that simply read: “Go Far.” It was in that in moment I realized I was destined to visit Bowling Green State University and speak with student leaders about the power of accountability and influence of Greek unity.

Today I was blessed to serve as the keynote speaker for BGSU’s 2018 Greek Executive Leadership Conference. We discussed how we are at a place in our history when we can no longer be static and wait for things to happen by osmosis. We challenged the practice of resting on our past successes in philanthropy and scholarship without developing a plan to address our annual shortcomings. We identified why we have avoided confrontation with our brothers and sisters and have chosen to take the easy way out.

As a result, we came to understand that we will argue about how to achieve our goals, but cannot and will not be complacent about the goals themselves.

I was also able to spend time with the Executive Council leadership and strategize practical solutions to challenges within our community. The dialogue was tough, often stressful at times but this group persevered. The Executive Councils at BGSU are the most passionate student leaders I have ever met and are committed to doing the right thing. They are all determined to do well and actively eliminate root causes to symptomatic issues plaguing our communities.

I am so glad our paths could interact because this visit certainly reaffirms my purpose on this earth. Critical reflection is often preached and courageous conversation is seldom practiced, but today we did both. Far too many times, mothers and fathers across the country have buried their children due to behavior we can all prevent. I am extremely proud of the BGSU Fraternity and Sorority Life community for taking the first step to changing peer culture here in Bowling Green, OH and ultimately the world.

“If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Together, we will go very far.

Encourage somebody to be great today!
